CHRIS Waller has never won a Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) but professional punter John McLeod believes that duck could be broken this Saturday.
Sydney’s leading trainer has sent three runners to Doomben for the Brisbane Carnival’s richest race and McLeod is giving a strong chance to one in particular.
“I’m pretty keen on Mackintosh ($8.00),” McLeod said in his Stradbroke Handicap preview video.
“He trialled nicely with the blinkers on and is a bleeder – most go well fresh (after the bleed). He’s timed his run perfectly for this type of race.
“He should park in about fourth on the fence, not too far away from the speed and is going to get the right run.
“This race is not really of Group 1 quality, it is more like a Group 2 and Mackintosh is definitely a Group 2 quality horse. A lot of these aren’t even of that standard.”
Aside from enjoying an ideal ‘trail’ in the run, McLeod’s projected track pattern also looks set to suit the first up Waller conveyance.
Currently rated a Good 4, the rail at Doomben has been moved back from the 5m position to 0.5m from the true.
“I think the track will favour leaders,” McLeod said. “They have moved the rail back in a few metres and I think there could be a pad there (on the inside) that could be fantastic.
“Keep an eye on the weather, there’s supposed to be some showers coming. That could make a difference to how you’d want to play this race.”
McLeod’s subscribers have enjoyed a fill up this Brisbane Carnival, enjoying 109 units profit since the start of may including 18 units last Saturday.
